Student Protests in Paris

There were more student demonstrations in Paris earlier this week to protest the plan to cut teaching jobs by the government.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy plans to remove over 11,000 teaching jobs from the education system over the next year in an effort to cut costs.

In an already strained environment, just over 2 years ago the youth of France staged mass demonstrations against the CPE, the Contrat Première Embauche, or the First Employment Contract.  This proposal allowed employers to hire those under 26 years of age for 2 years without a promise of future employment beyond the trial period.

Within a few weeks, the french government decided to withdraw the proposal.

Now that Sarkozy has started to move ahead with his political agenda to revitalize France, there will likely be more news from Paris of protests and strikes.
