Spring in Paris and the Country Fair Foire du Trône

Each year since the year 957, the Foire du Trône brings country fair attractions and amusements to Paris in the 12th arrondissement.  One of the largest country fairs in France, it was originally a place where merchants and vendors would meet farmers to trade commodities such as rice and grain.

It can be compared to amusement parks in North America, with rides, arcades, games, and rollercoasters.  What sets it apart is the type of food available - move over cotton candy!

Introducing...guimauve - a french type of marshmellow of a much thicker consistency.  It may be found curiously hanging on stands at fair candy vendors.  Gravity takes ahold as guimauve continually falls, and as this gentleman can be seen doing, it gets wrapped back up in a semi-kneading process.

Guimauve comes wrapped around a small stick as the woman above is holding.  If you're looking for a unique gastronomical experience in the city during the spring, the Foire du Trône will not disappoint.
