During your Paris vacation you will likely not be renting a car and driving, as you will inevitably have to drive through one of the infamous roundabouts that aren't for the faint of heart. (think 5-6 lanes of traffic but without any car lanes). Instead, opt for taking the Metro or walking - which are in fact the primary ways that Parisians get around.
One of the most important things to get upon your arrival is a map of the city, but not just any map like the single-page one offered at your hotel. You will need the Paris Pratique (par arrondissement) - in other words Practical Paris by Neighborhoods.
The Paris Pratique is a 100-page pocket-sized, softcover book that has every arrondissement, small street, and square in the City of Light. Conveniently arranged by arrondissement, you'll find this book indispensable - hence its other name in french - L'indispensable.
All streets are listed alphabetically at the front of the book where there's also a Metro map. For a city that does not have many linear or perpendicular streets, you'll be able to navigate the charming roads with ease - or at least without getting overly lost.
(Remember, street names in Paris are listed on the sides of buildings, and not on street corners or giant overhead signs. This needs getting used to when you first arrive!)
Where to Buy Paris Pratique
• Street Vendors / Kiosks
(the most convenient but can be a little more costly)
• Bookstores
• FNAC
Forum (Châtelet les Halles)
1-7 rue Pierre Lescot

Même les parisiens s'en servent ! Les jours de grève, on croise beaucoup de gens perdus essayant d'aller au travail avec ce petit livre vraiment très bien fait !
Very true - it's not just for tourists. Parisians keep this map book handy too!
