As you admire monuments and the architecture the city has to offer, it's easy to forget there's a stunning attraction high above the ground, viewable from everywhere - Paris rooftops!
It probably doesn't sound that exciting - but as you can see from these photos taken from an apartment window within the 16th arrondissement (thanks, Lise!), the views are beautiful and very visually interesting. Imagine seeing this view every day!
Check out these prime locations (aside from the Eiffel Tower) where you can climb some stairs or take an escalator to view the mystical Parisian rooftops.
1) Galeries Lafayette
This "grand magasin" is not just for department store shopping! Visit the top floor café and you will see a full view of the city. An outdoor rooftop is also available.

Note: A great view of rooftops with architectural diversity used to be viewable from another department store La Samarataine. However it has been closed since the summer of 2005 for major repairs due to asbestos. There are plans for its reopening in Autumn 2011.

2) The Towers of Notre Dame
Located in the heart of the city is the Notre Dame Cathedral. Explore the towers by climbing the narrow spiral staircase and be rewarded with an expansive view of Paris.
1st arrondissement, Ile de la Cité, located on the Seine, a short walk from the Louvre.

3) Sacré Coeur Basilica
High atop the Montmartre hill in the 18th arrondissement is a splendid view.
It's the highest point in the city with the view of and from Sacré Coeur equally breathtaking.

4) Arc de Triomphe
At the center of it all is the famed Place Charles De Gaulle - where 12 major streets meet. Climb the stairs for not only the view but also to see the chaotic, lane-free traffic from above.
