Student Protests in Paris

There were more student demonstrations in Paris earlier this week to protest the plan to cut teaching jobs by the government.  

French President Nicolas Sarkozy plans to remove over 11,000 teaching jobs from the education system over the next year in an effort to cut costs.

Dalaï Lama May Become Honorary Paris Citizen

According to the website of the Paris City Hall, Mayor Bertrand Delanoë is set to propose on April 21, 2008 to the Conseil de Paris that the Dalaï Lama become an honorary citizen of Paris.   With this gesture, the city of Paris is showing its support behind the people of Tibet.

Parisians Told to Smile at Tourists

For the 2nd year in a row, Paris City Hall and the Paris Tourism Office have launched an initiative to make the city more friendly to tourists.   Last year, the mayor of Paris handed out leaflets at the Eiffel Tower.  The leaflets described a charter on how to treat tourists visiting the city.  Now, the theme has shifted to a more proactive agenda with the slogan of "Paris Smiles for You!"
